Like a typical fireplace, a limestone fireplace also has three major parts, the hearth, the surround and the grate. A grate is usually made of iron and holds the burning fuel. The hearth is the flooring of the fireplace and can become extremely hot, so after the right length of time, a limestone hearth is nearly assured to break. One of the best ways to avoid this wreckage can be to have the limestone hearth sliced, sectioned and re-sealed for real fire use. After this is done the hearth is usually coated with high temperature cement for extra protection. It is best if the sealing is done at least two times. The second one should be done only after the first one has completely dried up. The surround is a structure built around the fireplace just for decoration purposes.
