SMALL SPACE DECORATING TIPS
![]() |
There is no question that a small space presents us with special challenges. Ironically it also presents us with an incredible gift: the need to pare down to the essentials. Though you might dream of living in a large house or apartment, most of us have to deal with living in a relatively small space. But just because you live in a tiny bungalow, bachelor apartment, or dorm room doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style to maximize your space!
1. Remove your interior doors (use curtains instead on closets and doors).
2. Replace your big refrigerator with a smaller.
3. Use track lighting aimed at walls to free up floor space and create an expansive feeling.
4. Dark rooms are not only depressing, but they also appear to be much smaller than they really are. To maximize your living space, make sure that your rooms are always filled with light.
5. Install lighting inside closets so you can see what’s in there. They will be easier to maintain and you will gain the feeling of more space.
6. One of the best options is built-in cabinets and bookshelves. These storage areas are built right into the walls and don’t take up any extra floor space.
7. Buy quality cookware, tableware, and linens. Small luxuries, such as table top fountains, go a long way.
8. By maximizing the full height of your walls, you will get lots of extra storage, adding to the sense of space. Add a vertical stripe motif to your walls.
9. Go wireless, transfer all your music to your computer and sell your CDs!
10. Opt for a sofa that has exposed legs, as this will appear smaller and less bulky than overstuffed ones with hidden legs.
11. Choose acrylic or glass side tables that allow you to “see through” them. This will help to add to the sense of space in a room.
12. Dining tables that can be made smaller or larger let you make the most out of a combined living-dining area.
The easiest way is without a doubt to hire an interior designer but chances are if you could afford one of those you wouldn’t have this small space issue to begin with. Knowing how to work with your space can make a huge difference. The above listed tips can work wonders for your small space if carried out with proper planning.
