Kenneth Cobanpue designs
Kenneth Cobanpue is a world renowned desigBrad pit starrer Ocean ner from the Philippines and is acknowledge as man who have put the Philippines and Asia on the world design map by his furniture and accessories. He completed his studies in industrial design at the Pratt institute for the industrial design NEW YORK and made his impact at the Milan furniture fair in 2001; where he showed his creation with along side other designers from his native country. Kenneth is known for his nature inspired accessories and furniture. He has worked with the biggies like Warner Brother’s
Brad pit starrer Ocean Thirteen in which he have shown his art. The Dragnet Lounge chairs, the Lola club chairs, Suzy Wong Arm chairs and the bar stools shown in the movie are his signature designs.
Brad pit was so much impressed by his designs that he bought his voyage bed, whose base is made up from the fastening used by the ship builders in the Philippines.
His designs seem to be the blend of the sinuousness of modern design and earthiness of natural materials. He is been credited for introducing the minimalism into the Asian design, which had been focused on carving and molding for many years. He says that ‘’ industrial materials like the steel and the rot iron are cold where as natural materials gives warmth and the only way for the Asian designers to survive is to go more high- end and do more designers furniture’’
Kenneth uses the several stuff like bamboo and abaca generally known as the Manila hemp, a tree with appearance of the banana plant, which is said to be the strongest natural fiber in the world and moreover it is also resistant to salt. He had also used rattan peel (surface layer of the rattan cane) which is known for its shinny finish and the sinewy texture and it also contains silica. It was actually part of his one of the most successful design Yin & yang, in which he used pieces of wire and wrapped in rattan peel which was standing on the stainless steel legs.
Among his master piece some of the things are Palomar Lounge chair in which he again uses the rattan strips that have been bent over a structural rattan frame after steaming. Each of them is individually tied with a nylon wire. Kenneth Cobanpue tours New York, Paris and shanghais and displays his creation on the shows every year.
