GREEN WINDOW

GREEN WINDOW

With urban living and high rises engulfing our lifestyle, there’s not much room for green spaces around us. Your window can become a dynamic art form which changes as the plants grow and seasons alternate. With a garden window, you can add a little greenhouse to any room. You can have a window garden that exists purely to spruce up your home and neighborhood. You may be satisfied to have just one burst of color in the spring and then allow trailing plants such as to dominate the window garden for the remainder of the growing season. The purpose may be color, shape, creativity, or greenery many types of plants can be grown in your window garden-annuals, vines, tropical plants, herbs and vegetables etc.

Tips

• Use a window garden box, in length equal to the width of the window, six or eight inches wide and eight inches deep

• The box should be lined with zinc and filled with sand or light mold. Not more than six or eight plants should be used in an ordinary window-garden box

• Drainage is an important factor to be considered when you are buying a window box. • You can choose between containers that have drainage trays attached and those that have separate drainage trays

• Invest in a moisture gauge to check how dry or wet your planting mix is before watering

• Water the window box enough to keep the soil slightly moist. It will need to be watered every day in the warm weather

• The simplest way to get rid of greenflies on the plants is to spray them with an organic pest killer

• If your window area is too windy, then you can opt for sturdy, bushy plants. The type of plant will also depend on how much sunlight your window garden will receive

• The plants in the window box will flower for longer if you regularly pick or snip off any dead flower heads

• If you really want to save money, build a garden window yourself using clear acrylic plastic and a wood frame

• Most plants need some light always and can be grown year round in a window facing the east, south and even west due to the amount of sunlight these directions receive

• Window plants must be turned regularly to prevent them from bending towards the light

Just because the space is less does’nt mean you cannot not have a garden. The above mentioned tips will help you have a garden window at your home.
