Dealing with hard water is a really difficult problem, but most homes all over the world face this problem. The trouble with hard water is that it can cause problems with many things in the house. All water contains trace minerals but some water contains higher levels of these minerals and is considered to be hard. The main minerals that can be found in higher concentration in hard water are calcium and magnesium.
Hard water stains shower doors, bathtubs, glassware and silverware with white water marks. These are actually mineral deposits from the water.

Hard water also deposits minerals on water pipes, which eventually slows down the flow of the water. These mineral deposits will also shorten the life span of some of your appliances like dishwater or washing machine because they are forced to work harder. Water heaters in particular are vulnerable. The minerals build up inside the heaters and eventually ruining them. You will have to replace these appliances more often

Clothing washed in hard water will also generally have a much shorter lifespan than clothing washed in softer water. Detergents, soaps and shampoos will also be affected. Soaps may not lather as well and hair may feel stiff, limp, and become prone to frizz. All this eventually has the potential to ruin any household budget.

Hard water treatments

An effective way to deal with hard water is to install whole house water filters at home which will also purify your drinking water. Another common way to soften water is through the use of an ion exchange water softener. This device uses an ion exchange process to replace hardness minerals in the water with another substance. A more recent method is Electronic or magnetic water descalers.
