BEDROOM LIGHTING
![]() |
Simply put, lighting is everything. Without the right light sources, even the most stylish spaces can look below average. Bedroom lighting purchases are usually driven by the existing furniture décor. . When building a new home, consider a pre-construction bedroom lighting plan. At that point, you can install lights wherever you want. With the flick of a switch, the proper lighting can help set the mood in a room and illuminate dark areas. Lighting can be dimmed for that added ambiance and intimacy during a romantic dinner, while entertaining, or while watching a movie.
Types and styles of lighting depend on bedroom occupants. Couples need individually controlled reading lights on each side of the bed. Children demand extra light for homework areas.
Few ideas
• The color of the bedroom walls will affect how much lighting is needed, so bear in mind that dark tones absorb light, and pale colors reflect it.
• Showcase your richest tapestries and bedding with GE Reveal bulbs. Since GE Reveal bulbs filter out dull yellow rays.
• Use task lighting to aid in grooming at a dressing table or mirror. For a vanity table, where one would be seated, shade centers should be 15 inches above the tabletop.
• If the bedroom has a center light, take the time to find a shade that fits the atmosphere of the room.
• Indirect lighting can offer a pleasant glow to relaxed bedroom environments.
• Be sure your overhead light is not too harsh. A softer bulb, dimmer switch, neutral ceiling shade or paper lantern will help diffuse light into a softer shade.
• Just as you can switch lights on at the door, you should also be able to switch them off from the bed. This is to prevent the need to get out of bed prior to nodding off.
There are two types of lighting: task lighting and ambient lighting. Task lighting is necessary while reading or doing detailed work and is achieved with directed and higher intensity light, such as a downward reading lamp. Ambient lighting is softer. To help create ambient lighting, consider having a dimmer switch installed so that you can control the amount of light and set the mood you are trying to achieve.
You can consult a lighting specialist to suggest you a few ideas. Also, find out what it will cost for an electrician to install these lights. This way, you will also have an idea on whether or not it meets your budget.
